Teeth can be loose to a variety of reasons. At the clinic, we see many patients that are often very distressed, because their teeth are very mobile. The majority of them has been having that problem for many years before they decide to come to us because it does not cause them any problems until it eventually does.
Why Do Teeth Get Loose?
Teeth get loose mainly when there is an underlying, undiagnosed gum disease, called periodontal disease. It is a disease that ranges from a simple inflammation of the gums to a serious condition that leads to severe damage of the bone and the soft tissue that support the teeth. Of course, in the worse cases, you can lose your teeth. Why does this happen? Because our mouths are full of bacteria which form a colourless, sticky plaque on teeth that only brushing and flossing can help remove. Any plaque that is not removed forms tartar that cannot be cleaned with regular brushing any more. At this point, only a professional hygienist or dentist can help. From that point on, it depends a great deal on how well you take care of your gums and teeth every day and will determine whether your gum disease is ceased or gets worse. So, in order to avoid such unwanted situations that could escalate into the serious problems mentioned before, hygiene is essential. You should see a hygienist every few of 6 months and make sure you have a good oral hygiene at home, to maintain the health of the gums and avoid periodontal disease, gingivitis, and other situations that could even cause the loss of your tooth.
Preventive Measures
It is of extreme necessity though to seek for a dentist’s help the soonest possible if you want to save your teeth. Unfortunately, we see many patients that have left it too long and the disease has progressed so much that there is no hope salvaging these teeth. In most cases, we need to remove as much as 70-80% of the bone that supports the teeth to treat the patient’s condition. It is sad, given that they could have saved themselves so much trouble, and they would have kept their teeth healthy, if only they had come to us earlier and had their teeth cleaned intensively by our knowledgeable hygienist.
Can I Save my Loose Tooth?
At the clinic, many patients come with substantial, but not advanced, bone loss. This is the case when we can salvage the teeth. As soon as this has occurred, the patient is put on a program we have exclusively implemented in our clinic, and they see a hygienist every 3 months to maintain their very good oral health and ensure the longevity of the teeth.
It has become evident that in order to save your teeth and have a lovely smile for many years, it is paramount you take good care of your oral health and hygiene and seek professional help, as soon as you detect a problem with your teeth and/or dentures, so we start an early treatment.
