As children we are all told, avoid too many sugary foods and drinks to ensure you keep your teeth for as long as you can!

However, there are a few other reasons that you may lose your teeth as you get older. We will explore in this article.

Reason 1: Acid levels in food

Each time we eat, the acid levels in your mouth increase drastically. It takes approximately an hour for these levels to once again return to normal.

It is at peak acidity that our teeth become most vulnerable to tooth decay as the acid wears away the enamel that protects our teeth. Our top tip would be to limit any sweet and sugary snacks to just one hit per day rather than snacking on such snacks throughout the course of the day.

By doing this you are limiting a spike in acids to just once rather than on numerous occasions which would be more favourable on your teeth.

Reason 2: Playing sports

You can keep the cleanest diet as an elite sportsman, but this still might not stop you from getting your teeth knocked out when competing.

In order to minimise the risk of losing any teeth, we suggest the use of a mouthguard. This will help protect your teeth if they were to come into contact with a high-impact collision. However, if the damage is done and a tooth does get knocked out, be sure to keep hold of it and store it in milk until you can get seen by a dentist to hopefully have it put back in.

Reason 3: Tooth grinding

This can be an entirely subconscious activity, but at some point in our lives, we may become prone to grinding our teeth.

As time passes, our teeth will begin to wear away and in turn put unnecessary strain on the surrounding tissue, gum and even bone. As a result of this, your teeth will begin to come loose and ultimately fall out.

The causes of grinding can vary, but in most cases can be caused by anxiety. Alternatively, an abnormal bite or crooked smile can be a contributing factor to tooth wear. We recommend that you book in to see a dentist as soon as you notice this habit developing, we can best advise on preventive methods and solutions.

Reason 4: Smoking

Similarly to having a bad diet, smoking can lead to periodontal disease leading to tooth loss.

Periodontal disease is the inflammation around the tooth, which can lead to a weakening of the bone and other supporting structures that hold the teeth in place.

Reason 5: Poor oral hygiene

The very least you can do to ensure you maintain healthy teeth is clean your teeth as advised by your dentist or hygienist.

We 100% recommend booking in to see your hygienist alongside your dentist. Your hygienist is a dental professional, highly trained in looking after your teeth and gums.

The risk of getting gum disease can be reduced by visiting the hygienist, and gum disease can be caught in the early stages as well as offering advice on the best practice to look after your teeth and mouth.

Many patients wonder whether a dental implant can get caries, also known as cavities. Considering that a dental implant is an artificial natural-looking replacement tooth, it is impossible to have any damage to a dental implant of such sort.

In detail, a dental implant is made of (1) an abutment, and (2) a crown. The abutment is screwed onto the bone and is made of titanium. Titanium is a bio-compatible metal that offers both durability and strength. Set that aside, it also has a unique property, as it can fuse directly to the jaw bone.
The crown, on the other hand, imitates the natural tooth and can be made of Ceramic, Zirconia, or Porcelain.
It becomes obvious that none of the above materials used is susceptible to cavities, given that cavities are formed when the acid from the foods and drinks eat through the tooth’s enamel and make a hole through it. Dental implants have no enamel; therefore, it is impossible to get any cavities at all.

However…

Your dental implants may not get any cavities, but you are still exposed to gum disease, the exact same way as with your natural teeth. So, don’t make the mistake and rest on your laurels, because it is important to care for your implant, if you want to ensure a long-lasting high-quality outcome and enjoy a beautiful smile for long.

How Can I Take Care Of My Dental Implant?

Your oral hygiene is of extreme significance, especially when you have dental implants. For that reason, you should:

  • Brush your teeth after each meal. At this point, it is important to note that you need to mind your toothbrush. Better use an adequate one, in order to have the desired results.
  • Flossing is also essential. Remember to floss between meals.
  • Interdental brushes are wonder-tools. Use them to clean the areas between the near of your gums and the teeth and remove all the extra food. Interdental brushes are perfect if you want to clean areas that your toothbrush cannot reach.

NOTE: You are free to use a mouthwash once a day, but don’t think that you can skip brushing and flossing. The area between your adjacent teeth and your implant can not be reached (and cleaned) only with a mouthwash.

IMPORTANT NOTE: According to research, only 40-50% of the bacteria that develop and find fertile ground inside your mouth after each meal can be removed by using a combination of brushing, flossing, and the use of a mouthwash. As formerly mentioned, with bacterias running wild inside your mouth, you are at risk of gum disease, which is why you need to see a hygienist regularly (preferably, every 3-6 months), if you want to be proud of those implants for many years to come!

But, the question here is…who to trust?

The hygienists here, at SameDay Teeth Suite in Nottingham, are properly trained to look after your dental implants and make sure you don’t suffer from any infection that will add a sad note to your attempt to achieve and maintain a lovely smile. If you are looking for dental experts and knowledgeable hygienists in Nottingham, SameDay Teeth Suite is your end destination.

It is a fact of life, if we are missing teeth, we can miss out on life.  We can lose our confidence and become self-conscious, even around close friends and colleagues. It feels like a downward spiral. The Same Day Teeth Suite will create your new smile and restore not only your teeth but your self-esteem.  No longer will you want to hide but can once again be the centre of attention, ready to take on everything life has to offer. If you are missing teeth, either as a result of an accident or through ageing, there is light at the end of the tunnel. No longer do dentures, bridges and implants need to look, and feel, alien but are made specifically for you to look as natural as your original teeth, or even better.

The replacement of missing teeth consists of a variety of different techniques, including using dentures, bridges or implants, not only to improve your good looks but your overall dental health. If you have gaps between your teeth where you have lost one or more teeth, it may disturb the way the rest of your teeth come together and function. Eating may be awkward and uncomfortable; you can no longer bite into a crisp apple and you can no longer whistle a happy tune. The remaining teeth in the mouth may, over time, tilt or move into undesirable positions causing food to get trapped in the spaces, increasing your risk of decay, cavities and gum disease. If this isn’t depressing enough, if several of your teeth are missing, your facial muscles can become slack, prematurely ageing your appearance and possibly affecting your speech.

But, as you become the advanced generation, there is now an advanced generation of dentures, bridges and dental implants to compensate.  We no longer have to fear we are going to become the archetypal senior citizen with dentures in a glass by the bed. Modern treatment options have put an end to this image.

If you are considering replacing missing teeth, your treatment options include:

  • Dentures (false teeth) – removable frames, made of metal or plastic, that hold false teeth.
  • Bridges – false teeth that are secured to neighbouring natural teeth.
  • Dental implants – metal ‘pegs’ that are surgically fixed in your jawbone as a foundation for dentures, crowns or bridges which are clipped or screwed securely onto this structure.

Every patient is different and has a different set of needs. The most appropriate treatment for you will depend on the number of teeth you have missing, the position of the missing teeth and the condition of any remaining teeth.

Why not book a consultation at The Same Day Teeth Suite to see which option is most suitable for you. We offer a FREE consultation where you can discuss your options in full with one of our experienced dentists.

Are you tired of:

  • Having poor fitting dentures?
  • Having dentures which look fake and unrealistic?
  • Being embarrassed by your smile?
  • Looking older because you feel you have a “sunken look”?
  • Being unable to eat your food?
  • Constantly having your dentures move?

Same Day Teeth Suite offers a variety of dentures that can help resolve your issues! Without wasting anymore time, here are our top range dentures!

  1. BPS Dentures

BPS dentures allow us to use the highest quality available (both teeth and plastic) and we have a wide array of shapes and colours of teeth to suit every profile. The BPS dentures use the SR Ivocap processing system, which uses continuous heat and injection-moulding that allows us to produce dentures that fit comfortably.

What is more, Ivoclar teeth create a realistic smile; therefore, no one will be able to tell you are wearing dentures. Moreover, compared to the cheaper acrylic teeth, Ivoclar teeth are significantly longer-lasting.

That being said; we use a STRATOS 300 IVOCALR articulator which allow us to position the teeth in an accurate way to achieve good stability for the dentures. By using this device, we can study your jaw movements accurately from front to back and from side to side. The advantage of this is that this will reduce the movements of your dentures as you eat.

In short, we not only use high-end materials and techniques, but also ensure your comfort, while you are wearing extremely durable and life-like dentures.

Steps to Make a BPS Denture
First and foremost, you will need to book a consultation and have us examine your mouth. Then, we will:

    • Take preliminary impressions utilising the Accu-Dent system-the latest in dentistry.
    • Once we have the final impressions, we use UTS (Universal Transfer System) to implement a Face Bow transfer.
    • Use an intraoral tracking device to have bite registrations. Usually, we use Ivoclar Gnathometer.
    • Finalizing the wax set up
    • Process Ivocap.
    • Insert the dentures.
  2. Swiss Dentures

The Swiss technique allows us to create a very stable and comfortable denture, especially when incorporated with dental implants. The Swiss dentures use the highest quality material and all the gum and teeth work is made by the leading Swiss dental manufacturer, Candulor. At Same Day Teeth Suite, we also use PHYSIOSTAR NFC Anterior teeth and CONDYLOFORM NFC Posterior teeth. Of course, needless to say, our technician is certified in the construction of the Swiss denture technique.

Gum disease or periodontitis or periodontal disease is often silent, which means that you may not have any symptoms until you reach an advanced stage of the disease. It all begins with bacteria that grow in your mouth that may lead to tooth loss, if not properly treated, because they destroy the tissue surrounding the teeth.

Gum Disease and Gingivitis

Some people confuse periodontitis to gum inflammation called gingivitis. Truth is gingivitis could indeed precede to gum disease, but not all gingivitis progresses to periodontal disease. In the early stages of gum inflammation, bacteria build up and cause the gums to bleed easily and become swollen, especially during brushing or even flossing. However, even though the gums may be tender and irritated, there is no worrying for the teeth, given that they are still firmly in place (in their sockets). This means that no irreversible damage to the tissue or bone has occurred yet.

Unfortunately, if you leave gingivitis untreated, it will definitely advance to gum disease. This is when things get complicated and far more serious than before. The inner layer of the bone and gum form pockets (small spaces between the gums and teeth) as they pull away from the teeth. These pockets become a farmland for bacteria and collect debris. As a result, they become infected, and the body initiates an immune response to fight the bacteria while the plaque continues to grow and spread below the gum line.

The bacteria in the plaque and the enzymes involved when the body is fighting an infection produce poisons or toxins that begin to break down the connective tissue and bone that hold the teeth in their sockets. The pre-mentioned pockets go deeper up the gum, destroying more bone and gum tissue along the way. As the disease progresses, the teeth eventually become loose as they are no longer anchored in place as firmly as before. This means irreversible tooth loss.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a nasty condition that affects not only your oral (and overall) health but also your self-confidence. Who feels comfortable having missing teeth? Will you keep on smiling if some your teeth have fallen? It is so sad to see people suffer from such an easily prevented condition.

Some of the warning signs that could alert you and urge you to visit your dentist right away include:

  • Tender, swollen, or red gums.
  • Pain and/or sores in the mouth.
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing (it may also occur when eating hard food).
  • Gums that have receded or are pulled away from the teeth, making the teeth look longer than what they used to be.
  • Loose teeth or teeth that are separating.
  • Puss between your teeth and gums.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • A change in the way you bite (teeth that don’t fit together like before).

For obvious reasons, having regular check-ups is critical to detect and treat any problems with your teeth and gums early, so you keep your teeth for as long as possible.

For any concerns or questions, please do not hold back from contacting the Same Day Teeth Suite. Early detection, especially among those with an increased risk of developing gum disease (i.e. smokers and people with diabetes) can save your teeth and your health from serious deterioration.

Don’t wait any longer.

Act NOW!

“Oh, I lost a tooth, Whatever shall I do?”

You may remember the rhyme from the playground and some of you may remember the visits from the tooth fairy. We all go through the experience of losing milk teeth as children but as adults we hope to keep all our teeth for life.  A few people ignore their teeth until it is too late but others, unfortunately, despite regular visits to the dentists and taking good care of their teeth, may need a tooth extracted and although this is no fairytale, it can have a happy ending. Same Day Teeth Suite will minimise your loss and restore your smile in no time at all.

Losing a tooth, or teeth may seem like the worse case scenario and indeed dentists will do everything they can to save a tooth, but there is a variety of reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted;

  • An extensively decayed or damaged tooth may become infected. With root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected before being filled or crowned.  It is important to treat an infected tooth as a matter of urgency to save the tooth and to prevent the spread of infection.  However, occasionally a tooth cannot be salvaged by root canal as treatment can be only be performed if the root canals are accessible and can be adequately cleaned and sealed and the tooth has sufficient bone support.  In cases where a tooth cannot be salvaged, it will have to be extracted.
  • Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, infects the gum tissue and jaw bone and, if left untreated, results in loosening and eventual loss of teeth.
  • Some patients have crowded teeth that need straightening for both aesthetic reasons and to improve the bite. In some cases, braces will be effective in solving the problem but in the most severe cases extraction is required to align the teeth correctly.
  • Occasionally we see patients with extra teeth, known as supernumerary teeth. Not only can the extra teeth look unsightly, diminishing your smile but they can cause problems with your other teeth.
  • Medication, specifically immunosuppressive medications prescribed after an organ transplant, can increase the possibility of infections associated with the teeth.  Doctors may well recommend the removal of some teeth prior to surgery.

If extraction of a tooth can’t be avoided, do not fear an appointment with the dentist. What may sound like a worse case scenario will be the best thing you can do in the circumstances.  Whatever the reason for the extraction, your dentist will explain the procedure, discuss your fears and suppress any pain. Modern dentists have lots of ways of seeing you do not suffer at all. In no time, the problem will be solved and you can begin planning restorative treatment, fixing your smile. Crowns, dental implants and bridges are made and fitted to replace your lost tooth as naturally as if they are your own.

If you know, or fear, you may need a tooth extracted, call Same Day Teeth Suite to make an appointment.

Missing a tooth could be the outcome of several conditions. At Same Day Teeth Suite, we see many patients who present with either:

  • fractured teeth that cannot be salvaged,
  • teeth which have come out due to trauma and can’t be placed back in, or
  • decayed teeth.

As you can imagine, many of these patients want something quick, especially when it’s at the front. Who can blame them? After all, there is no point having your spirits down, when modern dentistry can do wonders. So, what are the options available, when you have lost a front tooth and want a replacement as soon as possible? Let’s go through the 3 most common ones.

Options for Immediate Missing Tooth/Teeth Replacement:

  1. Immediate Denture

The first and most preferred option for many of our patients is to have an immediate denture. It is easy and rapid way to bring that smile back to your face. In particular circumstances, we can make a denture within a couple of days, then remove the tooth and fit the denture, all on the same day.

  2. Bridge

A bridge is placed by preparing the adjacent teeth. This can either be around the whole tooth or at the back of the tooth. Then, we remove the tooth, take an impression, and send the impression to the technician to fabricate either a resin retained bridge or a fixed bridge.

Note: This would be a temporary solution because when the tooth is removed, the gums heal over a period of 2-3 months, before they heal completely. We will then need to consider some definitive option, i.e. having a definite bridge of some sort.

  3. Dental Implant

A dental implant is an excellent solution if you have lost a front tooth as it is one of the quickest options provided. What we do during this procedure is to remove the tooth and place a dental implant immediately with a temporary crown and a temporary abutment. We allow this to heal for 3 months. Then, of course, we can do a definitive abutment to the crown so it looks like a natural tooth and nobody will notice you have a crown or fake tooth.

As you can see, these are all possible options if a patient presents with a missing tooth, and also quick options at the same time so that they don’t have a missing tooth for long.

Worrying about a missing tooth? No need to take it any further. Same Day Teeth Suite will provide you with an interesting Missing Teeth Guide that we are sure will answer lots of your questions. Plus, you can always contact us or call us on 01509 323420 and book your first free consultation, where we can go through your options, to decide upon the most suited solution for your dental issue.

Who would have thought that restoring a gorgeous smile and gaining an even more striking one would be within your arm’s reach!

Missing teeth can be unsightly and lead to dental pain. Dentures are one option, but for many people removable dentures don’t meet all their needs. Permanent replacement teeth in the form of implants are a definite solution but can be a long-drawn out and painful process.
The traditional route to implants was to undergo a series of operations; first to remove teeth, then possibly a sinus lift to augment the bone of the upper jaw and even if that wasn’t necessary, there was always an interim period in which dentures must be worn: an annoying and often frustrating temporary arrangement. The time, effort and costs of such treatment can all be daunting and the loss of confidence and enjoyment in life that results from temporary denture wear can be truly distressing.

Same Day Replacement Teeth

New technology and ground-breaking surgical procedures have led to markedly better approaches to the creation of new permanent teeth – in fact, it is now possible to have permanent teeth fitted in 24 hours.
“All-on-Four” is an innovative technological system which, in the hands of an experienced surgeon, can deliver painless permanent teeth the very same day. Structured around just four dental implants per jaw, a highly individual set of replacement teeth is crafted. The whole process takes place under sedation so the patient has a painless and relaxed procedure and 24 hours later, a complete set of permanent teeth.

All-on-Four: how it works

Because the “All-on-Four” system rarely requires the sinus lift procedure that is commonplace for traditional implants it can be more cost-effective as well as simpler and quicker. An initial dental consultation and full jaw radiograph launch the process. A CT scan may be required to assess jaw bone density in order to anchor implants and a comprehensive examination is always undertaken to ensure there are no hidden problems that could inhibit the success of the permanent teeth.
While the placement of the implants is broadly similar to traditional implants, being carried out under local anaesthetic, the location of the implants offers a radical improvement in dental stability. Two implants located in the front of the mouth benefit from maximum jaw bone density while two at the rear of the mouth are placed at a forty-five degree angle which provides optimum stability and anchorage and has the added benefit – in the upper jaw – of averting any maxillary sinus problems which traditionally required a sinus lift.

All-on-Four: the benefits

As a result of these advances in dental care and implant technology, there is no waiting time to allow healing. The “All-on-Four” implant system allows the client to go home with their new permanent teeth in place within 24 hours. Life returns to normal for the dental patient who can dine out, smile for photographs and relax into their daily routine, confident that their new permanent teeth will allow them to enjoy their work, hobbies and social life to the full.

At the Same Day Suite we see a lot of patients with a variety of teeth and gum problems which have lead to them needing to have their teeth replaced. In these cases, we use implants that can either replace individual teeth or provide a firm base for dentures.

The experience of a patient we had recently might shed some light on how the Same Day Suite can help with problems such as these. The lady concerned went to the NHS originally where she had two teeth removed, one at the front of her mouth and another a little further inside. Her concern was that they had given her a denture that, though it looked okay in the mirror, left her feeling self-conscious because it didn’tF feel right.

This is often the case with NHS services because they are there to provide a more rudimentary solution rather than one that is cosmetically pleasing and feels and look like a normal tooth. At the Same Day Suite, our aim is to find the right tooth replacement solution that is tailor made for the individual. The patient, after enduring her NHS teeth for some time, saw an advert for the clinic and decided to give it a try.

She was particularly attracted by the financing that enabled her to spread payments for the new teeth over a period of time and the fact that there was no big hurry to get her in and ‘signed up’. As will all patients at the clinic she was given a full and honest appraisal and all her questions about the procedure were answered by a qualified dentist.

Though the patient was convinced that she wanted to go ahead, her relatives were less enthusiastic, something that is common in many families. There are plenty of horror stories out there about bad practice and poorly fitting implants to put a lot of people off. At the Same Day Suite, we try to go that extra mile and give our patients all the information they need to make an informed decision. There’s no pressure to commit and patients can go away and think about it as much as they like.

The patient did decide to go ahead with the implant procedure, primarily because she felt she had lost too much confidence and wanted it back. She was fed up with putting her hand over her mouth when she laughed. The implants were put in over a period of a few weeks with time for the titanium implants to heal and then the new teeth inserted with the colour matching the rest of the patient’s teeth.

Having an implant put in can make a big difference to a person’s sense of worth and general well-being. As the patient told us after the procedure was carried out: “It’s not just the physical, it is a mental process as well, that makes me feel so much better. It doesn’t matter about your age either. I’m quite old and people would say, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter, you’re old now.’ But, it does matter.”

If you have lost a tooth, or a few teeth, either through decay or accident, you may choose to live with the gap.  Alternatively, as with most of our patients, you will want to replace them, and you will want to know what your choices are.  In these simple steps, the SameDay Teeth Suite will explain your options so you can make your decision and restore your smile.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically implanted into your jawbone. After the healing period of several months, when the implant has fused in place a false tooth is secured to the implant. Where a number of teeth are missing, dentures or bridges can be screwed or clipped onto the implant. Implants are considered the gold-standard restoration in modern day dentistry as they are the strongest, longest lasting, and life-like restorative option available to you.

Bridges

If only one or two of your teeth are missing, your dentist may recommend a bridge. This consists of two crowns, which are placed on your natural teeth either side of the space, with an artificial tooth in the middle. Bridges are made of porcelain and metal, and there are many designs.

Your dentist will prepare your natural teeth on either side of the space for the crowns to fit on top. The crowns are permanently attached to an artificial tooth in the centre. The biggest advantage, in comparison to dentures, is enhanced aesthetics and a fixed solution.

Dentures

It is sometimes necessary to extract teeth due to ill health and decay.  After you have teeth removed, it can take several months for your jawbone and gums to heal completely. During this time, your dentist may fit a temporary denture. Your dentist can usually fit this on the same day that your teeth are removed so you can wear it immediately.

As your jaw heals, the temporary denture may become loose and need adjusting. It can take up to six months for your jawbone and gums to become stable. Your dentist will then be able to fit your long-term denture or bridge.

The benefits of dentures are that they are the most economical and non-invasive restorative option. However, the biggest drawback is that they are not fixed and need to be removed to clean. In addition, they have reduced retention, in comparison to other restorative options.

Which Option To Choose

The most appropriate treatment for you will depend on the number of teeth you have missing. It will also depend on where teeth are missing in your mouth and the condition of any remaining teeth. Your general and oral health status will be a determining factor. Your dentist will help you decide which option is best for you.

Your New Teeth

Whichever option you and your dentist decide upon, rest assured you will have natural looking and fully functioning new teeth.  Made by the skilled clinical dental technician at our laboratory, with the assistance of cad-cam technology, each tooth is made individually to not only look good but to work well.  Whether you choose implants, bridges or dentures, your new teeth will be both strong and natural looking.

Are you missing teeth? Are you thinking about your options? If you have any further questions that you would like answering, please post your questions below and we will be happy to answer them.
